I've seen firsthand the kind of success Tom can bring to eCom businesses through SEO. We worked together on multiple clients and for each one, his mastery of SEO (and particularly the technical side) meant that every website we worked on together saw growth. He's also a top bloke, which I think goes along way. I've never seen an account manager so well respected and liked on calls with clients. If I was running a business and giving them the keys to my livelihood, I'd want to know I can trust the person I'm working with. I could definitely trust Tom.
Freelancer vs Agency

Why Choose an SEO Consultant over an SEO Agency?

You’re working directly with an experienced SEO, with a career spread over strategy, communication and execution. With over 10 years agency experience, I’ve worked across hundreds of websites, from local SMEs to high-revenue ecommerce brands.

You get the same strategic thinking and technical capability you’d expect from an agency, without the layers, delays, or inflated costs. The work is focused, commercially driven, and aligned to your business growth.

If additional support is needed via development, I will advise accordingly and bring in suitable specialists, so everything works together – without you managing multiple providers.

It’s simple, transparent, and can be the perfect fit to grow your business!

Your Common Questions Answered

Ecommerce SEO Consultant FAQs

I’ve listed below the most important queries I get asked about SEO, AI and my role in helping your business. I’ve divided this up by sections, so have a browse through each relevant tab or simply drop me a message via the contact form at the bottom of this page.

SEO = Search Engine Optimisation.

It’s the work I do that makes your website show up in search results – in front of people who are actively searching for what you sell or offer. Unlike paid ads, which stop working the moment you stop paying for them, SEO builds organic visibility on search results like Google that compounds over time. Done properly, it’s one of the most cost-effective ways to grow a business because you’re not paying per click, you’re earning traffic through relevance and trust.

In 2026, that also extends to how AI-driven tools like Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT surface your brand when people ask questions, which is increasingly part of the picture.

Honestly? It depends on where you’re starting from. For technical fixes like broken crawlability, indexation issues, and duplicate content, improvements can show up in Search Console within four to eight weeks – depending on the size of your website. For ranking and traffic improvements from on-page and content work, you’re typically looking at three to six months before things start to move meaningfully. Compounding organic growth, the point where SEO is genuinely reducing your paid dependency, usually becomes clear between six and twelve months in.

Think of paid search like renting a shop on the high street. The footfall is great, but the moment you stop paying rent, you’re out. SEO is more like buying the building. It takes longer and costs more upfront, but eventually the traffic is yours and nobody can take it away when the invoice doesn’t get paid. The strongest businesses I work with use both intelligently. Paid tells you what converts. SEO scales what converts. The two channels can inform each other when you’re paying attention to both. I have numerous experience of working alongside PPC experts, so I’m very familiar with cross-channel strategies.

Yes, and not just for the obvious reason that paid has a cost ceiling. Paid search gives you incredibly useful data about what terms and offers convert. SEO lets you own that traffic without paying for it indefinitely. A lot of businesses I speak to are spending more on paid than they’re comfortable with precisely because organic hasn’t been invested in. That’s a fixable problem over a six to twelve month horizon.

Because I’ve been every rung on the ladder in pure SEO. Startups, in-house, junior, senior, account manager, manager, account lead – I’ve covered every base before going independent. Most freelancers and SEO consultants come from one end of that spectrum or the other.

I’ve led teams, ran pitches, and sat in rooms with Paid, Social, and eCommerce teams working out how best to supercharge the organic performance of clients. That breadth of experience isn’t something you can fake or gain within days, months or even a year. But it’s what you’re getting when you work with me.

I do! Not a junior who got assigned your account after the onboarding call. Not a subcontractor. The person you speak to at the start is the same person who reads your site, builds the strategy, makes the changes, writes the reports, and picks up the phone when something needs discussing. If I ever need to bring in additional support for development work or a specialist area, I’ll tell you upfront who it is, why, and what it costs. There are no hidden layers.

Ecommerce, primarily on Shopify & WooCommerce (the ecom platform on WordPress).  These are the platforms where most UK and US SMEs actually operate and I know their quirks, their traps, and their opportunities from years of direct hands-on work. If your site sits on something completely different, I’ll tell you whether I’m the right fit rather than taking the work and figuring it out at your expense.

It’s one of the most common conversations I have. The pattern is usually the same: someone was taken on, a retainer was agreed, reports started arriving that looked busy but didn’t mean much, and six months later nothing had moved or the client hadn’t seen the value.

I can’t speak to what happened with whoever came before me, but I can tell you how I work differently. Before I take anyone on I want to understand your goals and your competitive landscape, and if I don’t think I can genuinely move the needle for you, I’ll say so rather than take the money. My reporting is built around what actually matters commercially, not metrics that look impressive but don’t connect to revenue or enquiries.

I could easily run a campaign where organic impressions go up, and overall rankings also move in the right direction. Sounds good on paper, but that type of reporting isn’t actually valuable to your business growth. You need targets off the back of business needs, and visibility over how organic traffic is both supporting other traffic channels, and impacting the bottom line of leads or revenue. I setup reporting to see exactly this.

Yes, and I have done before to potential clients. The easiest thing to do as a freelancer is take every enquiry that comes in, promise something plausible, collect the retainer, and produce enough activity to make the relationship look like it’s going somewhere. I don’t do that.

If I think your budget isn’t realistic for your competitive landscape, or that paid search is a more urgent priority than organic right now, or that your site has foundational problems that need fixing before SEO investment makes sense, I’ll tell you straight. I’d rather lose the work upfront than lose your trust six months in.

No – this is a natural and valuable pre-requisite of working at some agencies for such a sustained period. Overall, I’ve worked across single brands and start-ups, I’ve worked in agencies with multiple clients, and I’ve also worked at agencies that were higher volume.

The value of working across that many businesses over the last 10 years is that I’ve built up genuine pattern recognition across a wide range of website types, competition levels, and business models that I simply couldn’t have if I’d only worked on a handful of accounts. When I look at your site, I’m not starting from a generic template. I’m bringing direct experience of what works and what doesn’t across ecommerce and lead-gen specifically, applied to your actual situation.

No, and I’d push back pretty hard on this one. SEO traffic overall is down slightly, around two to three percent by most credible studies. Google still holds roughly eighty percent of the global search market. What has changed is how results are displayed, and that does require a different approach. AI Overviews, AI Mode, and tools like ChatGPT are increasingly surfacing content directly in their answers, which means the goal isn’t just ranking position any more, it’s being the source that gets cited.

GEO = Generative Engine Optimisation. It’s the practice of making your content the kind of thing AI systems like ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode will cite when answering relevant questions users search online. The good news? For most websites in 2026, the fundamentals of AI/LLM visibility overlap heavily with great SEO: clear structure, genuine expertise, well-organised content, strong E-E-A-T signals. (Expertise, Experience, Authority, Trust)

So if your traditional SEO is in order, you’re already most of the way there. Where GEO becomes a distinct focus is for brands with specific authority in their niche, who want to ensure they’re being cited and not just ranked in AI-generated responses. It’s worth thinking about in 2026, but I wouldn’t let it distract you from the basics of SEO – which in turn helps GEO.

Ha – I’ve seen this in practise, sadly! Using AI to produce content and having a content strategy are two entirely different things. AI can help produce automated copy. AI-written copy that can set off warning signals at Google which can result in manual actions being taken against you website – IE your website’s rankings being chopped (once that happens, it can be extremely hard to recover from).

In comparison to what I offer with my SEO freelance services, AI tools have not worked across start-ups, in-house teams or dedicated agencies. They’re not the real people who’ve been solving the real problems across SEO over the last 10+ years. In 2026, that’s what sets me apart from these fancy new tools – and this will still be the case years from now.

Your site actually needs an experienced human brain to diagnose and fix the issues to make you the most relvant results for your customers.

Volume without strategy is just noise.

It’s a bit like opening a restaurant and printing a menu with three hundred dishes when you’ve only got one chef and a microwave. Google’s Helpful Content system is specifically designed to demote content that exists to rank rather than genuinely help people, which is a significant proportion of AI-generated content that hasn’t been properly edited or shaped by someone with real expert knowledge.

A few well-written, properly targeted pages will consistently outperform hundreds of thin AI posts in the long-term.

At an agency, your account is managed by someone – I’ve been in that position. The work is then typically done by someone more junior – again, I’ve also been in this position. You’ll rarely speak to the most experienced person in the building after the pitch. If you’d like another analogy for this, it’s a bit like booking a Michelin-starred chef for a dinner party and getting their apprentice turn up with a recipe card.

Now, this is natural agency operations, and it’s a valuable business model. It’s a model that has helped me and countless others in their digital marketing career. With me as your SEO freelancer however, the person you speak to is the person who does the agreed work. For most SMEs, that’s a meaningful difference.

You get a decade of experience applied directly to your site, not filtered through agency operational layers, team leaders, and execs. The honest trade-off here is that an SEO freelancer doesn’t have a team of specialists in every discipline simultaneously, which is why I’m clear about any instance where I’d advise additional support.

I’m not competing on price with offshore platforms and I wouldn’t want to.

What I offer is specific: over a decade of agency experience across ecommerce and lead-gen sites, direct delivery without subcontracting, and a commercial understanding of how SEO fits into a broader business strategy in 2026 rather than just a checklist of technical fixes – with countless successful campaigns to back it up.

If you want the cheapest possible option, I’m probably not it. The businesses I work with shouldn’t be looking for a cheap option to organically grow their website. If you want someone who’ll tell you what’s actually holding your site back, do the work themselves, and track results you can measure against real business goals, that’s the conversation I’d like to have.

The starting point for most clients is an SEO audit request. You give me your URL, I take a look, and I’ll tell you honestly what I’m seeing and whether I think there’s meaningful opportunity to work on. No sales pitch, no obligation. If there’s a fit, we talk about what that looks like.

If I don’t think organic is the right priority for your business right now, I’ll tell you that, too. I’d rather lose the work than take on a client that I can’t genuinely help.

It varies depending on scope required to scale your store, but I operate on a transparent project and retainer basis rather than vague monthly packages with unclear deliverables. One-off projects like technical audits, content strategies, and backlink analysis are scoped and priced specifically for what your site needs.

Retainers are structured around what a meaningful ongoing engagement looks like for your business size and goals (SEO Foundation, SEO Growth, or SEO Performance). You can see an outline of my pricing on the pricing page. I’ll always discuss scope before anything is agreed.

I set up clean tracking from the get-go, with Google Analytics 4 and Search Console configured to measure what matters for your specific business. For ecommerce clients, that’s organic revenue, commercial keyword ranking targets, and sessions.

For lead-gen clients, it’s enquiry volume from organic and keyword ranking movement over time. I report monthly with context, not just numbers, but what they mean and what I’m crucially doing next. Metrics like raw impressions and overall keyword counts can be useful on the surface, but they’re not what I optimise toward.

That depends on what your site needs, which is why I scope properly before agreeing to anything ongoing. A retainer typically includes a combination of on-page optimisation  work, technical monitoring and fixes, content strategy or direction, and monthly reporting – it depends on the SEO retainer package. You get direct access to me rather than a ticket system or an account manager, and I’ll tell you what I’m doing and why each month. If something isn’t working, I’ll say so.

No reputable SEO consultant can, and I won’t. Google controls its algorithm, not me or anyone else. What I can tell you honestly is what your site needs, what I expect the trajectory to look like based on experience, and what a realistic timeframe for impact is in your specific industry. I’ll give you an honest projection from my end before we start, not a guarantee.

Yes. I work with UK and US-based businesses. The ecommerce sites I specialise in tend to operate in those markets and the keyword landscape and competitive dynamics are where I have the most direct experience. If your site operates in a different market, it’s likely I wouldn’t be able to support you at this stage.

Yes. Both platforms have their own quirks from an ecom SEO perspective that require specific know-how.

Shopify has a fixed URL structure, canonical tag considerations from product-collection path duplication, and an app ecosystem that can destroy Core Web Vitals if it accumulates unchecked. WooCommerce gives you more control, which is both its strength and its liability. The plugin stack and hosting environment determine performance in ways Shopify can handle for you automatically – dependent on setup.

The good news is that I‘ve worked extensively across both and know exactly where the platform-specific traps are.

Automated tools are useful for surfacing issues at scale – and there’s a lot of airy fairy free ones – but they commonly have two significant limitations.

1) They can’t distinguish between a critical problem and a cosmetic one.

2) They can’t tell you which of the two hundred items on the list will actually move the needle for your specific site.

One of the most common situations I encounter is this scenario – a client who’s been handed a huge audit with no priority order and no understanding of what it means commercially, just a load of red and amber numbers. Looks scary on the surface for a business owner, right? But I’ll tell you now, your website isn’t in trouble organically if a meta description is missing from a privacy policy page. It just isn’t going to make a commercial difference addressing that.

A proper technical audit from me is a human-prioritised, commercially relevant interpretation of what’s actually holding your site back, not a data dump.

At minimum: Google Analytics 4 set up correctly (many sites have it installed but misconfigured), Google Search Console verified and with enough historical data to work from, and access to your CMS to make on-page changes. If any of those aren’t in place, that’s the starting point and I’ll walk you through it. Beyond that, having a clear sense of your business goals is more useful than any tool. What does success look like, what’s the commercial priority, and what’s the competitive landscape you’re operating in.

The simplest way is to request a free SEO surface audit via the contact form. Give me your URL and a brief sense of what you’re trying to achieve, and I’ll take a proper look at the site before we even have a conversation. If there’s a meaningful opportunity there, I’ll tell you exactly what I’m seeing and we can talk about what working together might look like. No obligation, no pitch, just a straight read on where things stand.
